This recorded webinar focusses on the role of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques in the investigation and condition assessment of concrete structures. Attendees will be introduced to specific NDT methods categorised by their application in the attributes of Strength, Corrosion and Condition Assessment.
The webinar will explore the following Assessments by utilising these testing procedures:
Strength Assessment:
Rebound Hammer Test: This technique involves striking the concrete surface with a spring-loaded hammer to measure surface hardness as an indicator of compressive strength.
Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV): UPV measures the speed of an ultrasonic pulse through concrete, providing insights into the material’s uniformity and detecting flaws such as cracks and voids.
Corrosion Assessment:
Half Cell Potential: This electrochemical test method helps identify the likelihood of corrosion in reinforcing steel within concrete structures.
Resistivity Measurement: By assessing the electrical resistivity of concrete, this method evaluates the permeability and porosity of concrete’s, which is a major factor in durability.
Condition Assessment:
Infrared Thermography: This method uses infrared cameras to detect temperature variations on the surface of concrete structures, which can indicate voids, delamination, or moisture ingress.
Pulse Echo: Utilizing sonic echo and impact echo principles, this technique assesses the depth of surface-opening cracks and evaluates the thickness and integrity of concrete elements.
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR): GPR is effective in mapping the interior layers of concrete to locate embedded objects, such as conduits, pipes, and rebar, and to detect voids and deterioration.
Each session will explore the theoretical basis, practical implementation, and case studies where these methods have successfully diagnosed and helped mitigate issues in concrete structures. We will also discuss how test programs should be developed to maximise investigation results. This webinar aims to equip participants with the knowledge to choose appropriate NDT methods based on specific structural conditions and expected challenges.
