Conserving Concrete Structures – Managing a Ruined Masterpiece
Presenters: Peter Lovell and Michael Cook – Lovell Chen
The conservation of reinforced concrete structures is an area of study, which has come late to the compendium of heritage technical literature. This joint presentation briefly examines the nature of significant reinforced concrete structures in Victoria and the framework for heritage management. It explores the approach and repair techniques previously contemplated in the conservation of the 1913-15 Barwon Sewer Aqueduct.
Conserving Reinforced Concrete: Challenges and Opportunities
Presenter: Susan Macdonald – Getty Conservation Institute
Concrete is one of the most widely used materials of the twentieth century. Its structural and architectural development has produced a remarkably rich and diverse legacy, of buildings and structures, from different eras, and with an astonishing array of characteristics and qualities. Concrete heritage needs to be stewarded in ways that honour its significance; thus, conservation is now a necessary approach to dealing with this legacy. In this presentation, Susan will examine some of the challenges to care for concrete heritage and outline some current efforts to secure its future.
