Earthquake actions are a critical design action for reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The current version of the Australian Standard for earthquake actions, AS 1170.4, was released in 2007, with major amendments occurring in 2018. The code committee for AS 1170.4 has since undertaken an entire review of the code and drafted an update to be published in 2024. This presentation provides an overview of the earthquake design philosophy for Australian structures, important design considerations for RC structures subjected to earthquake actions and provide an overview of the changes in the upcoming AS 1170.4:2024.
