The use of sacrificial anodes for cathodic protection in concrete structures is much maligned. This arises from the early use of low current output anodes for cathodic prevention being incorrectly used as anodes giving cathodic protection. In worse cases the low output anodes provided no useful function. The issues arise from a poor understanding of electrochemistry leading to confusion about: How two lumps of zinc produce very different performances (life and protection) depending on a small volume of surface covering acting as an activator; the significant difference in repair design for cathodic protection, corrosion control and cathodic prevention; the influence of repair design on structural repair and cost; there is no agreed method for assessing the performance of sacrificial anodes so it’s hard to compare anode types; and Sacrificial anodes are often used without monitoring, while criteria and methods for impressed current cathodic protection evaluation are strictly enforced, implying that SACP and ICCP have different performances. This recorded webinar is intended to explain how to differentiate between electrochemical methods and determine when to use each. It will show how to design and specify for cathodic protection using sacrificial anodes. Projects in Australia and overseas will be used to reinforce the recommendations made.
CPD
This webinar provides 1 hour of CPD. Engineers Australia members may claim this hour of CPD if applicable to their area of engineering practice. This webinar is also recognised CPD for members of other professional bodies with annual CPD obligations. Participants should retain their purchase confirmation as evidence for their CPD records.
