Thermal Analysis and Cracking in Concrete

$44.00 CIA Member$66.00 Non Member
Presenter(s)
- Frank Papworth - BCRC
- Inam Khan - BCRC
This recorded webinar included two of Australia’s most experienced practitioners in the analysis and management of thermal cracking issues in concrete.
One of the key requirements in durability design is to limit maximum temperatures in the concrete pour to avoid deleterious effects and crack control to acceptable limits. Maximum temperatures and temperature differential are also a key part of crack control. Hence, the reasons for controlling temperatures and cracks are discussed together with key aspects of design. The presentations contain items of note for precasters, concrete suppliers, contractors and design engineers.
Thermal and Crack Design Requirements for Concrete Structures
Presenter: Frank Papworth, Director, BCRC
Frank will discuss the ‘whys’, and the implications for operational performance and long-term durability. It will include:
• Allowable maximum temperatures to prevent Delayed Ettringite Formation and limit effects on strength development.
• The significance of hot box testing (CIA Z7/05) and assessment of adiabatic temperature rise.
• Types of restraint crack, (internal, edge and end restraint).
• Limits on crack widths for durability, leakage and aesthetics.
• The importance of Quality Management and monitoring.
Designing for Temperature and Crack Control
Presenter: Inam Khan, Managing Director, BCRC
Inam will discuss the ‘hows’ and the limitations associated with various methods. It will include:
• 1D thermal analysis for flat plates.
• 3D thermal analysis for columns, blocks of concrete, multi pour elements, use of cooling pipe.
• Controlling insitu temperatures using insulation, cooling pipes, cement content and cement systems.
• Use of design approaches in C660, C766 and CIA Z7/06 for crack width control.
• Issues with crack control due to changing E-modulus during cooling.
• Important consideration for pour design, concrete materials, mix design, pour sequence, use of insulation and cooling pipes, and placing.
CPD
This webinar provides 1 hour of CPD. Engineers Australia members may claim this hour of CPD if applicable to their area of engineering practice. This webinar is also recognised CPD for members of other professional bodies with annual CPD obligations. Participants should retain their purchase confirmation as evidence for their CPD records.
