  • David Hocking - Gunlake
  • Dikai Liu - University of Technology, Sydney
  • Govinda Pandey - Rockfield Technologies Australia

The concrete construction industry is rapidly evolving with the integration of smart technologies. Innovations in sensors, IoT (Internet of Things), AI, and advanced materials are transforming how concrete structures are designed, built, and maintained. Smart concrete technologies improve durability, efficiency, and safety while reducing environmental impact, making construction processes smarter, more sustainable, and cost-effective. This webinar will present a number of new and innovative technologies that are being integrated into our day-to-day design, specification and construction of concrete structures, and how they are being implemented.
Utilising Smart Technologies to Enhance the Customer Experience: A Concrete Supplier’s Perspective
Presenter: David Hocking
The presentation will cover utilisation of Smart device/technology improvements for product, people and processes to value add the concrete supply from a placement, and end user perspective. It will describe the various technologies in use, such as slump management in transit (Verifi), real time moisture content management (Polarmoist), and ingestion of data with analytics on key concrete properties. It will also cover at a high level, some technology enablers such as temperature sensors, and remote admixture handling for internal stock control.
Intelligent Robotics for Concrete Structure Construction and Maintenance
Presenter: Professor Dikai Liu
This talk will explore the challenges associated with applying intelligent robots in construction automation and civil infrastructure maintenance. Methodologies that enable robots to operate autonomously or collaboratively with humans in field environments will be discussed. Several case studies showcasing intelligent robots in practical applications will be also discussed, including robots for building construction and underwater structure maintenance.
Bridging the Future: Innovative Asset Management of Ageing Concrete Bridges using Real-Time Monitoring
Preesenter: Govinda Pandey
Australia faces significant challenges in managing ageing bridge infrastructure, with over 70% of bridges now exceeding 50 years of age, many at the end of their intended design life. Traditional assessment methods often rely on tools suited for new structures, leading to overly conservative evaluations. AS ISO 13822 offers a framework for plausibility checks, helping to reassess the true condition and capacity of these assets using performance and monitoring data. Beyond flood and scouring risks, heavy vehicles pose the greatest threat to structural integrity. Modern sensor and image recognition technologies now enable non-invasive classification of vehicles, capturing axle loadings, spacing, speed, and dynamic factors. These innovations support real-time assessments and risk-informed asset management. The presentation showcases case studies where advanced bridge and traffic monitoring, combined with interactive interfaces, have empowered asset owners to make smarter and data-driven decisions, transforming the approach to infrastructure lifecycle management and compliance monitoring.
