This webinar invites two experienced Concrete Bridge designers, John Hilton and Peter Burnton, to discuss the current trends in Concrete Bridge Design.
New age imperatives for innovative concrete bridge design
Presenter: John Hilton
Concrete is the most successful bridge construction material in the world. Traditionally, the main constraints for the design of concrete bridges have been construction cost, durability, strength, and ductility. As we move through the first quarter of the 21st century, new drivers are emerging, both in Australia and many parts of the world: unprecedented urbanisation, the effects of global warming, the importance of sustainability, increased emphasis on worker safety, and the rollout of autonomous vehicles. The presentation will explore the new market conditions these drivers bring and discuss implications and opportunities for innovation.
Design of unbraced wall bridge piers to AS 5100.5-2017
Presenter: Peter Burnton
The Clause 11.1 (b) of AS 5100.5 Bridge Design – Concrete, states that unbraced walls shall be designed in accordance with Sections 9, 10 and 11 of AS 5100.5 as appropriate. This webinar will explore, what this broadly stated clause may mean, in the design of blade bridge piers in Australia. Topics that will be discussed include the appropriate use of beam, slab, column, or braced wall design methods; reinforcement detailing and the application of rules for earthquake detailing.
