Pier Pavilion above par

The Pier Pavilion constructed from a recycled concrete mix has been built on the harbour-front in Sydney.

The mix involved a customised range of recycled aggregates and 450,000 recycled oyster shells in the structure situated at Barangaroo on the western side of the city’s CBD.

Standing more than seven metres’ high, the civic pavilion includes 85 columns around the perimeter that support the roof which is planted with 2500 native plant species, sandstone, and logs to create microhabitats and attract native insects and birds.

In the triangular pavilion roof is a seven metre-wide oculus that can be viewed from the 18 metre-wide seating area below.

Infrastructure NSW commissioned architects Besley & Spresser’s design for the pavilion that blends land, sea, and sky, which won a national design competition in 2020 ahead of 170 entries.

Structural engineer was SDA Structures that won CIA NSW Excellence in Concrete Awards in 2023, 2021, and 2019, for Bondi Pavilion, Concert Hall House, and Castle Cove House, respectively.

Sydney-based Stephen Edwards Constructions which built the Pier Pavilion specialises in government projects and has been around since 1979.
