Bridge demolition and rebuild

The Marchbanks Road bridge will be replaced to make it higher and wider as part of Inland Rail’s plans for Broadford in regional Victoria.

At the same time, the railway tracks below the existing bridge and the nearby Hume Highway will be lowered 1.5 to 2.1 metres to accommodate the double-stacked freight trains that will use the rail line in the future.

John Holland will construct the new bridge later this year after the existing bridge is demolished to make way for the new structure.

Works will be undertaken up between 500-1000 metres on each side of the bridge to create a safe gradient and clearance.

When completed, the Inland Rail line will run from Brisbane to Melbourne through the eastern states of Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.

The project comprises 12 sections requiring upgrades or enhancement works for around 1000 km of existing rail track and construction of a further 600 km of new track.

The sections between Beveridge in Victoria and Parkes in central NSW are prioritised for completion by 2027.

Inland Rail is the largest rail infrastructure project in Australia and is managed by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC).
