Documents for the Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program Proposed Works to Tender have been released ahead of tenders for 20 contracts to be announced from April.
There are 22 contracts up for grabs – five for construction and 17 for design for the Queensland project. Pre-qualified contractors and designers will be invited to tender, the state government said, promising the contracts would be released “as soon as possible”.
The package, for the $9 billion Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program (BHTSP), will accelerate delivery of safety works along priority stretches of highway between Gympie and Cairns in Queensland.
According to law firm Maurice Blackburn, the 1600 km Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns is the most dangerous road in Queensland. It ranks third nationally as Australia’s most crash-prone road and accounts for all five of Queensland’s top crash sites.
Included in the contracts will be five narrow bridge upgrades, 50 kilometres of pavement strengthening, upgrades to multiple intersections and rest areas.
“Dedicated designer and constructor panels have been established for the BHTSP to streamline procurement, accelerate delivery and ensure value for money,” the government stated.
“Contractors will be appointed progressively from April 2026, with construction to follow.”
