With Stage One civil works completed at Perth Airport’s Terminal Two, the airport development is the first to earn a coveted sustainability rating.
The rating sees the T2 Apron Expansion and Aviation Support Precinct (ASP) becoming a benchmark for sustainable Australian aviation infrastructure, having embedded sustainability considerations from day one.
Skyfields, Perth Airport’s property team is delivering the $80 million project in collaboration with GHD and West Coast Civil to provide the new apron space for T2 and increasing overnight aircraft parking spaces from 38 to 55.
The recent works have been recognised with an Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) Essentials Design Rating under the Infrastructure Sustainability Council’s (ISC) v2.1 framework.
GHD Sustainability Consultant, Nikita Worthington, told Infrastructure Magazine that using IS Essentials, it provided a clear, structured path for integrating sustainability into every decision and encourage collaboration across teams.
The project team expects a 15% reduction in embodied emissions by such measures as reusing existing fill, retaining lower pavement layers, and using recycled crumbed rubber in place of virgin asphalt.
More than 57,000 kilolitres of potable water is also expected to be conserved across construction activities.
Lead civil contractor, West Coast Civil, was able to implement new sustainability practices as well as contribute to industry culture by promoting mental health awareness on-site in partnership with the Happiness Co Foundation.
