Significant Infrastructure Project Starts

Construction of the $1 billion Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade Project south-east of Perth is expected to commence shortly, with the contract just awarded.

Concrete Institute of Australia’s Gold and Silver members, BG&E and GHD, have teamed up with BMD, Civcon Civil and Project Management, and Georgiou Group, to form the Tonkin Extension Alliance for this significant WA infrastructure project.

“The Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade are being delivered together due to the timing of development and delivery, overlap of stakeholders and geographical location,” the WA and Australian Governments said in a joint statement.

The contract comprises a 14km extension of the Tonkin Highway from Thomas Road to South Western Highway as a four-lane dual carriageway with a shared path alongside;  five underpasses; a footbridge overpass; two bridges over rail; an interchange and two roundabouts; multiple road connections; screening walls; fire and emergency egress; and lighting.

Complementing the extension is the upgrade which includes the widening and duplication of 4.5km of Thomas Road between Kargotich Road and South Western Highway with a shared path alongside; grade separated interchange; equine crossing and path network; screening walls and noise barriers; and lighting.

Construction of the project is scheduled to commence in mid-2025 with completion anticipated by late 2028. Around 4400 direct and indirect jobs will be created.
