Precast Engineering - AS 3850, AS 3600 & NCC are keeping up. Are you?
With the recent release of the revised versions of AS 3850: Prefabricated Concrete Elements, Part 1: General Requirements, and Part 2: Building Construction, this presentation will look at what has changed and why. It will also touch on the work of the new committee National Precast Engineering Group (NPEG), the Standards Australia committee BD-02 Subcommittee SC3 relating to Prefabrication, and some of the proposed changes to AS 3600 Concrete Structures, and implications from the National Construction Code (NCC).

Presenters
Simon Hughes. Over the past 30 years Simon has been involved in all facets of precast design and construction. Simon commenced work as a consulting structural engineer and has since worked at several of Australia’s largest precast companies where he has been instrumental in the successful completion of hundreds of precast projects. In 2020 Simon started Precast Concepts Pty. Ltd, primarily involved in offering independent technical advice and conceptual design. Simon is a Chartered Professional Engineer, a current Board member of the National Precast Association of Australia, a past president of the Concrete Institute of Australia (Victoria Branch) and is an Australian representative on Commission 6: Prefabrication of the Fédération Internationale du Béton (fib). Simon is also the CIA representative of BD-066 responsible for Australian Standard AS3850: Prefabricated Concrete Elements.
Rod Mackay Sim. From 1982 Rod pioneered the design, manufacture and deployment of engineered, quick-connect concrete lifting systems. These revolutionised prefabricated concrete construction. He is the Drafting Leader for Standards Committee BD-066 responsible for AS3850 Prefabricated Concrete Elements an Honorary Member of the Concrete Institute of Australia and Life Member of the National Precast Association of Australia.
Geoff Fletcher. Geoff is a chartered engineer and is registered in Victoria & Queensland for civil/structural engineering. He has broad design, research and construction experience, particularly regarding precast concrete and concrete anchorage systems. He is a member of Australian Standards committees for AS 3600 (Concrete Structures), AS 3850 (Prefabricated Concrete Elements) and is a member of the fib (International Federation for Structural Concrete) Task Group 2.9 re Anchorage into Concrete. He has worked closely with the major Australian precast industry association (National Precast) for about 20 years and is also an active member of the Forensic Engineering Society of Australia.
Stephen Roach has over 30 years’ experience as a trade union official. Over the last 10 years he has worked as an Occupational Health & Safety officer with the CFMEU Construction (VIC/TAS Branches). He has been a member of Australian Standards BD66 committee - Prefabricated Concrete Elements since 2014.
