Event Summary

Designing for safety in concrete structures involves a comprehensive approach that considers various factors to minimise risks and ensure the safety of both the structure and the community. There are many aspects involved but by integrating safety considerations into the design process, we will create concrete structures that not only meet performance requirements but also provide a safe and secure environment for everyone.

Our seminar on Design for Safety in Concrete will include three expert presenters who will consider the impact of risks from a legal perspective, safety on site, and an overview of what can wrong and how issues can be avoided, or reported.

Carlo Garofali, Special Counsel, McCullough Robertson
Carlo is a dual qualified professional civil engineer and lawyer.  He commenced his role as special counsel with the Construction & Infrastructure team of McCullough Robertson in 2023 after previously working with the firms of Mills Oakley and Allens for over 9 years.  The majority of Carlo’s career has been devoted to the construction of concrete, initially as a site engineer and director of a concrete contracting company, then serving as the national engineering manager of a leading German formwork and scaffolding company. Currently a member of the CIA NSW Committee, Carlo was also president of the NSW Concrete Placers Association for ten years and has sat on Standards committees for formwork and scaffolding.  Carlo’s legal expertise is focused on construction-related disputes - working with stakeholders to improve project delivery and contractual practices to either help prevent disputes occurring in the first place or to assist resolving disputes when things invariably go pear-shaped.

Karlie Collis, Director, Northrop
 & Director CROSS-AUS
Karlie has been part of the team at Northrop Engineers since graduating from The University of Newcastle in 2004.
Karlie has been heavily involved in the design and documentation of a number of large scale multi-storey developments, together with a range of other residential, commercial and institutional projects. Her specialty is working with architects and project managers to provide unique solutions to site constraints, including modular construction where appropriate. She enjoys working on unique projects that require “out of the box” solutions.
Karlie is passionate about the sharing of lessons learned in the construction industry and CROSS-AUS is a vital tool in enabling this in Australasia. She hopes all Engineers can support the growth of CROSS-AUS in Australia as a free and essential component in raising the bar in safe structures.
