Event Summary
Designing for creep, shrinkage, and serviceability in Australia requires a thorough understanding of local standards, environmental conditions, and material properties.
Creep is the gradual deformation of materials under sustained load over time. Shrinkage refers to the reduction in volume of concrete as it cures and dries. Both phenomena affect the long-term performance and serviceability of structures. Serviceability is about ensuring that the structure remains functional and aesthetically acceptable under normal use.
Australian Standards such as AS3600 and AS5100 provide designers with the information required to design for these factors, however it can sometimes be difficult to know which Standard to use, and when to apply. This seminar will include experienced designers and practitioners in the areas of creep, shrinkage, and serviceability.

Prof Shami Nejadi, UTS
Synopsis: This presentation will analyse the design of reinforced concrete structures for Serviceability covering design for behaviour under working loads with specific reference to cracking and deflection. It presents the simplified and refined calculations procedure for predicting long-term deflection and a simplified approach to flexural, restrained shrinkage, temperature cracking, and crack control.
Shami Nejadi is an Associate Professor at the University of Technology Sydney. He received a PhD from UNSW and has worked as a senior design engineer at the consulting firms TTW, SKM, and Robert Bird for seven years.
Gianluca Ranzi is professor and Chairman of the Centre for Advanced Structural Engineering at the University of Sydney. His research interests fall in the areas of modelling and experimental characterisation of the material and structural response of concrete and composite structures at both service and ultimate conditions.
