New Year’s procurement resolution

Queensland’s new procurement policy for a more sustainable concrete and construction industry came into effect from 1 January 2026.

Known as the QPP 2026, waste reduction and recycling principles will be embedded in procurement practices along with innovative methods that prioritise environmental and social sustainability.

Green industries and technologies will be supported, including promoting decarbonisation solutions in supply chains to reduce waste and contribute to resilient communities.

Procurement activities will be implemented that promote emissions reductions in procurement focus areas including building, construction and maintenance, transport infrastructure and services, information and communication technology, and utilities that support the achievement of the state’s emissions reduction target, in alignment with sector emissions reduction plans and other climate initiatives.

The new policy aims to incentivise suppliers to adopt sustainable practices and support ethical suppliers who align with the government’s objectives of well-paid and safe workers, enhanced productivity, and adherence to contracts.

The Queensland Government intends to develop a competitive supplier pool to create greater opportunities for small and family businesses, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses, female-owned businesses, social enterprises, businesses owned/operated by people with disability, and culturally/linguistically diverse suppliers.
