Construction of a new pier in Port Phillip Bay will begin early in 2027 following the appointment of a civil marine contractor.
Victoria’s Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne announced that Simpsons Construction Co. has been awarded the contract for the new St Leonards Pier on the Bellarine Peninsula.
Demolition of the existing timber pier that was reconstructed in 1957 following the original that opened in 1859, will occur after summer. Construction of the new pier will begin in February 2027 and occur concurrently where possible, according to the state government. This will assist in accelerating delivery of the project and minimising construction time.
Civil contractor, Simpsons Construction Co., has built two of Victoria’s most well-known piers. The $11.9 million Altona Pier that opened in January 2024, and the $58 million St Kilda Pier, constructed throughout 2022-2024, which opened later that year in November.
The St Kilda Pier was awarded the Victorian Architecture Medal at the 2026 Australian Institute of Architects’ state awards.
The new St Leonards Pier will sit adjacent to the original pier and have a perpendicular 140 metre finger jetty to suit a range of recreational purposes.
Simpsons Construction Co. has been around for about 35 years and does a lot of work in the marine, bridges and water infrastructure sectors. The company is expected to complete the new St Leonards Pier for client Parks Victoria by the end of 2027.
