The project team on Sydney’s Warringah Freeway Upgrade has come up with an award-winning concrete pavement to rehabilitate and replace existing sections of the major carriageway.
Constructed in the 1960’s, the freeway features a Mesh Reinforced Concrete Pavement (MRCP) that continues to perform more than six decades later. However, MRCP concrete pavements are no longer part of standard Transport for NSW (TfNSW) specifications.
So, the project team then developed 16 new pavement profiles, 191 new edge details, and 121 new interface details, CPB Contractors stated. These were each supported by carbon footprint and Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) assessments.
These required diverse concrete mixes including high early strength mixes, steel fibre mixes and conventional R82 and R83 mixes. And installation of the concrete on the brownfield site while maintaining traffic flow of 250,000 vehicles daily required innovative construction.
This high stand of work led to the Warringah Freeway Upgrade project being recognised for design excellence and winning the Arvo Tinni Award for Best Urban Pavement Infrastructure Design at the Australian Society of Concrete Pavements (ASCP) recent conference.
Arvo Tinni AM was the NSW Department of Main Roads (DMR) Resident Engineer for the original freeway construction more than 60 years ago.
