A combined team effort has seen a “mammoth” and faster than planned continuous pour of Australia’s largest cavern invert completed.
The cavern is part of Sydney Metro’s Hunter Street Station and measures 28 metres-wide and 20 metres-high, with the pour managed by Holcim Australia.
The pour exceeded 3000 m³ according to the company and that just three months earlier, a 2400m³ concrete pour was considered ambitious.
A huge team included several large companies working together and over 70 drivers delivering concrete to the Hunter Street Station site to complete the “mammoth” cavern pour.
“Working with the John Holland, CPB Contractors, Ghella Joint Venture, and Kenny Constructions Concrete, our teams delivered a 3042 m³ continuous cavern concrete pour in 63 hours: nine hours faster than planned,” Holcim Australia stated.
More than 20 people from the company co-ordinated operations, technical, project and customer service centre functions and the concrete was supplied from facilities at Alexandria, Artarmon and Lidcombe. Reliable mix design was engineered for long-duration placement and consistent finish.
The successful project was built on weeks of pre-pour coordination — logistics modelling, truck movements, driver changeovers and readiness checks, enabling the joint venture to complete the cavern invert efficiently and safely, according to Holcim Australia, a Gold Member of the Concrete Institute of Australia.
