Weather contributes to new concrete bridge

The contract to construct a new concrete bridge over railway lines to replace a temporary single lane steel bridge has been awarded by the NSW Government.

Heavy rain in March 2021 damaged the Burley Griffin Way railway overpass bridge in Wallendbeen, north-west of Canberra, leaving it with significant cracking in the brickwork and subsidence in the road.

The original structure was quickly demolished and a temporary bridge was later constructed as the road forms part of an important freight route.

The new two-lane concrete girder bridge will be built by Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure and will feature a 30-metre deck, wider lanes and better approaches, with plans also for pedestrian access. Work is expected to commence in early 2023.

UGL Regional Linx oversees all operations and maintenance on NSW’s Country Regional Network and will work with Abergeldie to build the new crossing. The state Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Sam Farraway, said the new bridge would improve travel times between the Hume Highway and the Riverina, Olympic Highway and New Highway.

Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure has been around for 25 years and regularly secures regional contracts throughout the eastern states. In addition to the Wallendbeen tender, the company has recently been awarded the West Dapto Road Upgrade project and the Castle Hill Water Recycling Plant Compliance project.
