Recycled concrete provides local benefits

Concrete extracted from the demolition of a former velodrome in NSW will be repurposed instead of sent to landfill.

When demolishing the former site in the north-east of the state to make way for a future University of New England campus, Tamworth Regional Council (TRC) took the initiative to sustainably deal with the resource.

Extraction and removal of 1600 tonnes of concrete from the site will be repurposed into a 20 mm blended road base material, the council’s director of water and waste, Bruce Logan, said.

The repurposed concrete is set to have multiple applications across various projects in the region in roads as well as drainage stabilisation.

Additionally, the council will make the material available for the public to purchase after it is tested, to provide an affordable and sustainable option for local construction and landscaping.
