The vision of the Concrete Institute of Australia is excellence in concrete.
The Institute aims to meet this through its mission – to promote and develop excellence in concrete research, technology, application, design and construction throughout Australia. Recognition of excellence in concrete is a vital part of this mission whether it be for an individual’s contribution, a specific concrete building or structure, or advances in technology and innovation.
The Concrete Institute of Australia, in line with its objectives recognises those people, projects and activities that exhibit excellence in concrete industry and the Institute through its Awards and Honours program.
Awards for Excellence in Concrete
In 1972, the National Council of the Institute resolved to implement an awards scheme to coincide with the Biennial Conferences. The awards were to recognise high achievement in the use of concrete in buildings, bridges and engineering structures, as well as research, education and other activities. Over the pursuing years, the Awards have been presented at every Biennial conference held by the Institute since 1973. To date the Institute has recognised hundreds of projects, technologies and innovation in the pursuit of excellence in concrete, and the esteemed Kevin Cavanagh Trophy.
Individual Honours and Awards
In April 1970, the original subscribers to the Memorandum of Association and the Articles of Association of the Concrete Institute of Australia provided for the granting of Life and Honorary Memberships in recognition of outstanding contributions. In recent years new individual awards and honours have been added to the Institute’s “recognition” program, and it is through Individual Honours and Awards that the Concrete Institute of Australia recognises those people who have made outstanding contributions to the industry and the Institute. The granting of these Awards is carefully considered, and the Awards are highly regarded.
Concrete PhD Research Award
The Concrete PhD Research Award (formerly known as the National Engineering Bursary) is made to post graduate students studying engineering, chemistry, materials science, building science and other relevant subjects which contribute to the research knowledge base of concrete in Australia and is awarded for excellence in thesis work on concrete and cement based products and processes.
National Presidents
The Concrete Institute of Australia has been built by the hard work of our many volunteers since 1969 and the election of our first National President, Mr William Brown. We would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication that the 29 Past Presidents have made to our organisation.
Honorary & Life Members
An Honorary Membership is awarded to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the development and use of concrete in Australia and a Life Membership is awarded to a person who has given long and other meritorious service to the Concrete Institute of Australia. The granting of these Awards is carefully considered and the Awards are highly regarded.
