Making tracks into rail sector

Malaysian company Gamuda Berhad has flagged it intends to expand further into Australia as it eyes opportunities to grow its base here.

In its first five years here, its wholly owned Australian subsidiary Gamuda scored three big NSW contracts to the tune of $4.5 billion. This included the Sydney Metro West – Western Tunnelling Package where it partnered with Laing O’Rourke in a consortium to deliver 9 km twin rail tunnels from Sydney Olympic Park to Westmead. Gamuda also secured contracts on the Coffs Harbour Bypass and M1 Motorway Extension to Raymond Terrace: Black Hill to Tomago.

Led by CEO Ewan Yee, Gamuda is now the parent company’s second largest construction base. Yee told Rail Express that “Australia is becoming a crucial part” of its international operations.

“We’re seeing great opportunities here and are eager to leverage our strengths to meet the country’s growing infrastructure needs. We’re excited to grow further and continue making a positive impact in the infrastructure sector.”

The company is aiming to build scale and enhance its complex civil and tunnelling works in the rail sector and leveraging its broader capabilities in Australia that include DT Infrastructure, Tunnelling Solutions, and Gamuda Land, its property development arm.
