More concrete culverts will be installed on South Australia’s rail track network this weekend to improve drainage and reduce the risk of track washaway during flooding.
The Australia Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) will install four reinforced concrete box culverts between Kingoonya and Wynbring, near Tarcoola, near the centre of the state.
The upgrades will improve drainage and reduce the risk of tracks washing away during flooding.
The works come in the wake of other recent upgrades, including 22 culverts completed between Tarcoola and Port Augusta, and form part of a broader program to strengthen the rail network’s performance.
The resilience works are being delivered across the East–West corridor, the rail link between Western Australia and the eastern states.
According to the ARTC, the culvert design is in accordance with the Precast Reinforced Concrete Box Culverts Standard AS 1597.
In addition to the culvert works, more than 32 additional maintenance activities will be undertaken, including sleeper replacement.
