Main construction is set to begin on the new Beveridge Intermodal Precinct in Victoria once site preparations are completed.
The $1.62 billion precinct in Melbourne’s north will be the site of Australia’s largest and most advanced logistics hub.
The Beveridge Intermodal Precinct will be located at the southern terminus of the Inland Rail freight corridor and will help shift freight from road to rail, removing 167,000 truck trips annually. Each train pulling into the Intermodal will replace up to 110 trucks, according to the Federal Government.
Key approvals are now in place for the 1100-hectare site, Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said, paving the way for site preparations to begin and then main construction early in 2026. Four hundred hectares are developable land.
National Intermodal describes itself as a government business enterprise working with construction partners to build the precinct as well as other precincts in Sydney’s west, and Brisbane.
The new intermodal precinct is expected to create 8,000 jobs within the precinct and support over 17,000 at its peak, with 70% of the workforce living locally.
Once operational, double-stacked trains will be able to run between Melbourne and Brisbane, via Parkes in the central west of NSW.
