Sustainable Industry-First

A product designed and developed in Brisbane, specifically for Australia, is being touted as a ‘game changer’ in reducing the CO₂ footprint of concrete.

The new liquid admixture is designed to increase strength and reduce carbon emissions in concrete, according to Mapei, one of the Concrete Institute of Australia’s Silver members.

Concrete makes up around one percent of Australia’s overall emissions profile and around 8% of the world’s so the company has come up with Mapecube that it said meets industry demand for stronger, durable, low carbon concrete.

Mapei’s Wacol facility in Queensland created the Mapecube 70 formulation, specifically for Australia, general manager Marco De Santis told CIA NEWS, citing it as a “significant milestone”.

“It’s an industry-first solution enabling concrete producers to incorporate higher binder volumes while preserving or improving durability, reducing CO₂ emissions and lowering costs per cubic metre,” he said.

“With cement manufacturing and production contributing to nearly 8% of the world’s total carbon dioxide emissions, the Mapecube is an important contribution to Australia’s cement and concrete industry’s quest for climate neutrality as we transition to net zero by 2050.

“We hope this product encourages wider adoption of sustainable practices and drives demand for greener building materials and innovations in Australia.”

Mapei’s product can be added along with other admixtures, enhancing early strength in 24 hours, mid-to-late strength in seven days, and late strength in 28 days.
