The roles of design partner on a vital road project in New Zealand and environmental planner and assessment advisor on Australia’s high speed rail project have been awarded to a Silver member of the Concrete Institute of Australia.
AECOM has announced its appointment as design partner on the Northland Corridor project at the top of NZ’s North Island. It will work with Acciona as the lead contractor on the Warkworth to Te Hana section of the new 100km motorway connecting Auckland and Whangārei.
Mark McManamny, AECOM’s Chief Executive of Australia and New Zealand said the Northland Corridor is expected to improve safety, resilience and connectivity across the upper North Island.
“We have brought together some of the industry’s leading transportation, engineering and design specialists from across New Zealand, Australia and our global business to support delivery of this nationally significant project,” he said.
The company’s design solution is to reuse on-site materials, reducing the need for imported materials and minimising waste. This lowers haulage and embodied carbon, delivering cost efficiencies while supporting sustainability goals and reducing the impact to the environment.
Detailed design and early works will begin in late 2026, with construction expected to start on-site in late 2027, the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi stated.
AECOM has also been appointed, in partnership with bd infrastructure, Biosis, Artefact Heritage, and IRIS Visual Planning + Design, to the environmental planning and assessment advisor role for the two-year development phase of the Sydney to Newcastle High Speed Rail project.
The team will prepare environmental impact assessments, manage biodiversity and heritage approvals pathways, and develop the environmental strategy to help ensure the project is ready for construction.
