Advancing the development and scale-up of carbon capture and storage across the global concrete and cement sector are the aims of an agreement between two global industry entities.
The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) and the Global CCS Institute (GCCSI) think tank have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which establishes a framework between the two organisations to advance the development and scale-up of carbon capture and storage (CCS) across the global cement and concrete sector.
As part of the agreement, the two organisations will work together to promote awareness and understanding of CCS technologies for cement; share technical insights and policy considerations to support CCS adoption; and advocate for CCS as a critical component of cement sector decarbonisation strategies globally.
The two-year partnership will work to accelerate industrial decarbonisation through shared outreach, thought leadership, capacity building, and stakeholder engagement to support CCS as a key mitigation option for the cement industry.
Thomas Guillot, Chief Executive of the GCCA, believes the cement and concrete industry has been making progress to achieve its mission to fully decarbonise, using a range of technologies and mechanisms.
“We know that carbon capture and storage is a crucial lever for the industry to get there and we know that the technology works. Through working more closely with the GCCSI we are looking forward to helping our members reach their net zero goals more quickly through the use of CCS project pathways, including crucial policy outreach,” he said.
Marking the first major milestone under the MOU, the GCCA and GCI will meet for a high-level roundtable with industry leaders and key stakeholders to enhance collaboration and accelerate progress on shared priorities and initiatives.
