Event Summary

The NEXGen webinar series is organised by the CIA NEXGen committee, with the objective of providing opportunities for the next generation of concrete leaders to convene, present and participate in technical events and knoweldge development.

This webinar focuses on Innovative Concrete Structures and includes two young professionals, Joel Brown (WGA) and Frank Yang (Moffatt & Nichol) presenting on two incredibly innovative structures where concrete played a vital part in their success.

The webinar is FREE for all CIA Members and will be hosted by CIA NEXGen Steering Committee member Thuc Nguyen from GHD.

Presentations:

Australian Underwater Discovery Centre: An Underwater Multi-Storey Building. The Australian Underwater Discovery Centre was an ambitious project involving constructing a multi-storey concrete building on land, launching it into the water, sailing it 200km through open oceans, sinking it, and attaching it to the sea floor.  Accessible by a 1.8km existing timber jetty in the tourist town of Busselton in WA.  The plan was simple.  Whilst the building is yet to be constructed, the building was fully designed to cater for all stages of life. Joel Brown was the lead Structural Engineer on the project and will walk you through a highlights package of this project.

CTC Graving Dock Caisson Gate Replacement. When most people think of floating structures, concrete is not the first material that comes to mind. Yet for many marine applications, concrete offers a unique combination of durability, resiliency, and corrosion resistance that makes it exceptionally well suited for long-term floating infrastructure. Join Frank as he explores the design and construction of large floating concrete structures, including both cast-in-place and precast solutions. Through examples of innovative projects and a detailed case study of a recently completed floating concrete graving dock caisson gate, attendees will gain insight into planning, design constraints, construction methods, and launching procedures for these remarkable marine structures.

Speakers:

Joel Brown is a Principal Structural Engineer and Project Manager with WGA.  Whilst most of his work has been centred around renewables developments, mainly wind farms, he has worked on a variety of projects including mining developments, industrial buildings, and commercial buildings.  Joel is also the President of the WA Branch of the CIA.

Frank Yang is a Marine Structural Engineer with Moffatt & Nichol with over 30 years of experience delivering complex waterfront and marine infrastructure projects. His work spans a wide range of facilities, including piers, wharves, and large floating concrete structures. An active contributor to industry standards and guidance, Frank serves on the committee developing the ASCE/COPRI Manual of Practice, Large Floating Structures, and leads the development of the manual's chapter on stability design.
