Event Summary

Metakaolin and Beyond

Presentations:

Metakaolin - The Next Generation SCM: A concise, standards aligned overview of what metakaolin is, how it is manufactured through controlled calcination, and the extensive economic, performance, and productivity gains that an optimised high reactivity metakaolin delivers when correctly incorporated into concrete across diverse applications.

Beyond Metakaolin - Unlocking the Full Potential of Calcined Clays for Sustainable Concrete: The future of low-carbon concrete depends on materials that are both scalable and durable. Drawing on nearly 20 years of experience with metakaolin and calcined clays, this presentation will examine durability, implementation challenges, and how calcined clay can accelerate the adoption of low-carbon concrete technologies.

The webinar will run, as a live presentation, from 2.00pm to approximately 3.00pm (AEDT). It is conducted online on the Zoom platform and delegates will be emailed login details and a password for this webinar prior to the event.

Speaker Bio's:

Peter Tutbury is a concrete technology specialist with more than 30 years’ experience across the pre-mix, fibre-reinforced, mining and construction materials industries. His expertise spans concrete mix design, product development, technical services, NATA-accredited testing and the commercial implementation of construction technologies. Peter has held senior technical and commercial roles with leading organisations, working extensively with concrete producers, contractors, engineers and infrastructure stakeholders. At ZEOTECH, Peter has spent the past two years developing high percentage metakaolin concrete systems. His work has focused on optimising slump retention, setting characteristics, bleed-water performance and admixture compatibility, providing a practical pathway for the increased use of metakaolin as a supplementary cementitious material.

Rackel San Nicolas is an Associate Professor from the University of Melbourne and an internationally recognised researcher in low-carbon cementitious materials, with almost two decades of experience investigating metakaolin and calcined clay technologies. Since 2008, her work has focused on understanding the relationships between clay mineralogy, processing, durability, and concrete performance, while supporting the transition of these materials from laboratory research to industrial implementation. Her current research explores innovative calcined clay resources, multi-component binder systems, and practical pathways to reduce the embodied carbon of concrete without compromising durability and engineering performance.
