Event Summary
Design for Safety
This webinar invites three specialists to consider Safety in the Design Process and the impact of risks from a legal perspective, safety on site, and an overview of what can wrong and how issues can be avoided and safely reported. Designing for safety in concrete structures involves a comprehensive approach that considers various factors to minimise risks and ensure the safety of both the structure and the community. There are many aspects involved but by integrating safety considerations into the design process, we will create concrete structures that not only meet performance requirements but also provide a safe and secure environment for everyone.
Presenters:

PRESENTATION DETAILS:
The webinar is presented in three sections:
Overview of designers’ legal responsibilities – including case studies of what not to do. Carlo Garofali.
Consultants, contractors and building practitioners are being placed under increasing regulatory scrutiny particularly with respective to design obligations. Safety in Design is a catch phrase that we may readily recognise but not necessarily appreciate how it impacts design and construction practitioners in the ever-evolving construction industry regulatory environment. Carlo Garofali will provide a legal perspective of what practitioners need to know to comply with their Safety in Design obligations. He will also provide a number of case studies of prosecutions against designers which illustrate what not to do.
Safety in-design and Designers obligations under WHS laws. Shish Bhandary

Carlo Garofali is a dual qualified professional civil engineer and lawyer. He commenced his role as special counsel with the Construction & Infrastructure team of McCullough Robertson in 2023 after previously working with the firms of Mills Oakley, and Allens for over 9 years. The majority of Carlo’s career has been devoted to the construction of concrete, initially as a site engineer and director of a concrete contracting company, then serving as the national engineering manager of a leading formwork and scaffolding company. Currently a member of the CIA NSW Committee, Carlo was also president of the NSW Concrete Placers Association for ten years and has sat on Standards committees for formwork and scaffolding. Carlo’s legal expertise is focused on construction-related disputes - working with stakeholders to improve project delivery and contractual practices to either help prevent disputes occurring in the first place or to assist resolving disputes when things invariably go pear-shaped.
Shish Bhandary is an Assistant State Inspector in the Engineering Team of SafeWork NSW. He has a Masters in Civil Engineering and a Masters in Civil Engineering Management. Shish has more than 8 years of experience in civil & structural engineering and specialises in manufacturing, design and the construction of temporary works in the construction industry, covering: Jumpforms, Perimeter Safety Screens, Formwork and Scaffolding.
