Event Summary

Concrete is inherently a highly durable material, but over time, exposure to environmental elements, load stress, chemical exposure, and improper or changes in design or construction can cause deterioration. Timely repair and rehabilitation are crucial to restoring concrete’s structural integrity, preventing further damage, and extending its service life. 

This seminar will investigate some of the modern techniques and best practices that are used in concrete repair and rehabilitation, to ensure that concrete structures meet safety and performance standards efficiently. Our presenters will look at design and specification updates, along with innovations in repair practice and materials.

Durable Concrete Repairs & Corrosion Protection – A Proactive Approach to Extending Service Life
This presentation explores the key principles behind durable concrete repair and long-term corrosion protection of reinforced concrete structures. The seminar will discuss the root causes of deterioration, electrochemical imbalances in concrete, and the importance of adopting a targeted proactive repair strategy rather than reactive patch repairs. The session will also cover the selection of suitable repair mortars based on site conditions and repair geometry, along with modern corrosion protection technologies including Hybrid/Fusion anodes and emerging surface-mounted anode systems. Practical insights and durability concepts will be shared through real-world industry experiences and case studies.

Newcastle Ocean Baths Remediation
The Newcastle Ocean Baths remediation project showcases a long-term, effective solution to corrosion in a heritage-listed coastal structure.
The reinforced concrete walls, built in the 1920s with what appears to be unwashed sea sand, were prone to chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion. In 2005, an impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system was installed, successfully halting the corrosion while preserving the Baths’ historic character and appearance. Over two decades, the ICCP system has performed well, maintaining the cultural value of the iconic site. The project exemplifies excellence in durable concrete repair and electrochemical protection in a harsh marine environment and an overview of these remediation works to this local icon structure will be discussed in this presentation.

Project Overview - Geraldton Port Remediation
This presentation will highlight the investigation, design, and delivery of a long-term durability and maintenance strategy for Berths 3, 4 & 5 at Geraldton Port in WA, developed to achieve a targeted 30-year service life extension for these critical marine assets.

Troy will provide an overview of the staged remediation program, including how the successful delivery of the initial investigation and design phase led to the subsequent award of additional stages of work.
Key aspects of the project that will discussed include:
• Condition assessments and investigations undertaken
• Development of tailored repair and protection solutions to suit the unique operational and structural requirements of each berth
• Delivery of a highly technical remediation program incorporating concrete repairs, hybrid anode cathodic protection systems, steel and concrete coatings
• Strategies used to successfully deliver complex remediation works within a live operational port facility while minimising disruption to port operations
• Data showing long term performance of the cathodic protection system used on the project

The presentation will provide practical insights into the challenges, design considerations, and construction methodologies associated with extending the service life of heavily exposed marine infrastructure assets.

Hamid Khan, Product Segment Specialist (ANZ) - Repairs & GroutsFosroc
Hamid Khan is a forensic engineering specialist and industry-recognised specialist in structural concrete repairs.  As the National Product Segment Specialist Hamid’s role is to harness high-performing technologies to respond to complex repairs and applications with 28 years of experience in the industry. Working in the Fosroc International team in Dubai for 14 years, Hamid was able to see repair products in action on a vast range of projects in the Gulf, Middle East, Europe, and Asia.
 
Hamid’s trusted expertise is demonstrated by his regular speaking roles at industry conferences and seminars, and numerous published articles. He is a past president of ACRA and played an active role in HB84:2018 Guide for Concrete Repair and Protection (A Joint publication of ACRA, CSIRO, and Standards Australia) and other industry courses.
 
Hamid holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a double Master’s in Business and Strategy from the University of Wollongong. He is certified in Concrete Technology and Construction by the City & Guilds of London Institute (UK).

Dr Mohammad Ali, Principal, GHD
Dr Mohammad Ali, a Principal of GHD, has a PhD in Civil Engineering with concrete Durability and Cathodic Protection Specialisation. He has designed numerous Cathodic Protection (CP) systems in Australia, New Zealand  and overseas during his 30+ years working life in Australia. He was involved in the 2003-2004 investigation of the Newcastle Ocean Baths and the subsequent CP design. He has authored in excess of 60 technical papers, and assisted in many standards/guidelines in CP and Durability in Australia including AS2832.5 Cathodic Protection to reinforced concrete structures. He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia, and a Past President of the Australasian Corrosion Association

Troy Palmer, Engineering Systems Manager at Marine & Civil Maintenance, MCM
Troy Palmer is the Engineering Systems Manager at Marine & Civil Maintenance, based in Sydney, NSW. He previously served as the Project Engineer for the Berth 3, 4 & 5 Concrete Remediation Works (2018–2020), where he was responsible for managing all aspects of project delivery. Troy is a certified AMPP Coatings Inspector Level 2 and AMPP Cathodic Protection Level 1 (Tester), and a member of Engineers Australia. He has over 10 years’ experience in the infrastructure remediation industry and is an active member of the Australasian Corrosion Association (ACA) Concrete Structures & Buildings Technical Group. In his current role at MCM, Troy helps lead a team of engineers specialising in asset management and durability engineering.
