Summary: This webinar brings together two presentations on concrete durability and remediation in marine environments. The first explores the evolution of cathodic protection for reinforced concrete, examining key failures and lessons learned, while the second addresses the practical challenges of delivering concrete remediation in active port environments.

Presentations:

Cathodic Protection of Concrete in Marine Environments; the mistakes that were made so you don't have to. Since the introduction of cathodic protection (CP) for reinforced concrete structures, it has been used in a variety of forms to protect assets ranging from iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House to the critical transport infrastructure that supports our economic prosperity. Over the years, CP has delivered many successes, but it has also experienced notable failures. These failures have driven the industry to improve design approaches, advance technology, and continue innovating the way CP is implemented. This presentation will cover the fundamental principles of CP in concrete, examine several key failures and the lessons learned from them, and conclude with a selection of case studies that set new benchmarks in their time.

Keeping Berths Berthing – Concrete Remediation in Active Port Environments. Undertaking concrete remediation in an active port presents particular challenges for minimising the impact on ongoing port operations. The design engineer’s role should not just be confined to specifying the repair materials but tailoring the remediation design for the specific constraints of each port environment. Using project learnings from two different concrete remediation projects, a bulk liquids berth in South Australia and a bulk concentrates berth in Tasmania, this presentation will highlight how engineering design principles can be used to facilitate concrete remediation projects while balancing competing requirements and constraints in active port environments.

The webinar will run, as a live presentation, from 2.00pm to approximately 3.00pm (AEST). It is conducted online on the Zoom platform and delegates will be emailed login details and a password for this webinar prior to the event.

Engineers Australia members may claim this hour under Type II (Seminars and Workshops), applicable to their area of engineering practice given its focus on cathodic protection of reinforced concrete, corrosion mechanisms in marine environments, failure analysis and lessons learned, and infrastructure durability case studies. This webinar is also recognised structured CPD for members of other professional bodies with annual CPD obligations. Speaker Bio's:

Liam Holloway is Managing Director of MEND Consulting and a materials engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the assessment, durability, repair and protection of reinforced concrete structures. Liam has worked across Australia and internationally on major marine, transport and industrial infrastructure projects, with a particular focus on corrosion mitigation, cathodic protection and asset life extension. He is passionate about practical engineering solutions that deliver long-term value and improve the performance of critical infrastructure.

David Ewers is WGA’s Tasmania Lead and a structural engineer with experience across the buildings, ports and resources markets. He is passionate about developing sustainable engineering solutions that help asset owners extend the operational life of ageing infrastructure, particularly given the key role that port and industrial facilities play in regional economies and communities around Australia.
