The Chau Chak Wing Museum, at the University of Sydney, is an extraordinary concrete building. It was awarded the Kevin Cavanagh Trophy for displaying excellence in concrete above all other entries in the Concrete Institute of Australia Excellence in Concrete Awards 2021. This webinar invites the builder, design engineer and materials engineer to go behind the scenes and explore the detail of how this award-winning complex structure was designed, constructed and put together to produce a world class masterpiece in Building Science with a one hundred year design life.

Specific Details of Construction:

The precast elements of the building and timing of the installation:

  • The prototype – considerations and the mistakes
  • Construction impacts of a 100 YEAR design life
  • Reinforcement cover
  • Treatment of reinforcement
  • Concrete considerations
  • Crack control (minimization)
  • Singular wall element considerations
  • The formwork
  • Steel detailing
  • Post-tensioning of the wall
  • Concrete mix design

  • Class 2 walls – what defines “Class 2” and the common traps
  • Cast in services techniques and issues in a Class 2 exposed concrete soffit
  • Defects. How they were assessed
