AS 5100 Bridge Design – Concrete Updates
This webinar provides a background to the recent amendments to Australian Standard AS 5100 Bridge Design – Part 5, Concrete. The amendments are significant and reflect the developments in concrete bridge design and assessment since the Standard was issued in 2017.   Durability provisions have also been revised.  A focus has been to achieve alignment with the Concrete Structures Standard AS 3600: 2018, where appropriate. We have invited two eminent members of the Bridge Design community and members of the BD090-05 subcommittee, John Hilton and Wayne Roberts, to present a review of the changes, the background, and rationale for incorporation of these amendments into the Standard. This webinar is not only applicable to bridge designers and specifiers, but to all concrete design, specification, construction, and materials practitioners.

The webinar is presented in two sessions:
 
Designing concrete bridges to the new strength and serviceability provisions of the recent AS 5100.5 Amendment. John Hilton.
John’s presentation will include the new provisions for concrete and reinforcement design under fatigue loading, implications of new requirements for reinforcement detailing and MCFT shear design, steel relaxation under elevated temperatures, introduction and benefits of higher strength steel reinforcement which is now available, new requirements for punching shear and the importance of reinforcement anchorage.  Some comparison will be made with the provisions of AS 3600 and upcoming future introduction of Ultra High-Performance Concrete for bridges.  The implications of sustainability; embodied carbon, service life and resilience will also be discussed.
 
A detailed look at the updated durability section of AS5100.5, along with some insights on concrete material properties and some construction related issues. Wayne Roberts.
Wayne’s presentation will provide a detailed insight into the updated durability design provisions in Section 4 of AS5100.5 stepping through some of the changes and the reasons and background for these changes that influence both the durability design and some of the construction aspects of concrete bridges.  A review of some of the concrete material property updates, along with some insights into the inter-relationships between materials, design and construction will also be discussed.

The webinar will run from 2.00pm to approximately 4.30pm (AEDT). It is conducted online on the Zoom platform and delegates will be emailed login details and a password for this webinar prior to the event.

Presenters

John Hilton is chair of Subcommittee BD090-05 responsible for the production of the AS 5100.5 Concrete Bridge Design Standard. John Hilton has more than 40 years’ experience in bridge design within Australia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, New Zealand and Africa. As Aurecon’s Global Capability Leader for Bridges, John provides input into resource allocation, business development, promotion, and development of digital engineering for bridges, technical reviews and verification. John has presented over 60 technical papers at various forums and has received several personal awards for technical excellence. John is a Board member of the Civil College Board, Engineers Australia.

Wayne Roberts has 30 years of experience as a Structural / Civil Engineer focused on bridges and heavy industrial structures. Wayne's career includes: 4 years completing a PhD on Steel Composite Concrete Bridges, 7 years working in private industry involved with load testing bridges and other heavy industrial structures, and 21 years working for the Department of Transport and Main Roads QLD primarily focusing on concrete, precast concrete, and concrete technology, and more recently on other aspects of bridge design and construction.  Wayne is a member of (representing Austroads) subcommittee BD-090-05 responsible for AS5100.5, and the durability working group within this committee and also represents Austroads and Engineers Australia on a number of other standard’s committees responsible for concrete related products and materials.
