North East Link update

Construction workers have completed a 500-tonne lift to install beams onto the highest pier of Melbourne’s North East Link, among many other challenging tasks.
In Bulleen, the team is building the southern section of the North East Link, which includes the tunnel entrance and Yarra Link Green Bridge.

Tunnel fit-out works are continuing following the completion of tunnel excavation and waterproofing and reinforcement are being done for the SEM mined tunnel.

The September 2026 construction update from Victoria’s Big Build also focused on the upgrade of the Eastern Freeway, to make a seamless connection to the North East Link Tunnels.

More than 160 of the 188 beams that will be used to support the elevated ramps connecting the Eastern Freeway to the tunnels have been installed.

The team has also started building a concrete structure in the centre median near the Chandler Highway that will support the Eastern Busway Bridge over the freeway for city-bound buses.

Workers are continuing to build the Doncaster Park & Ride multi-level carpark structure.

Over the coming months, Victoria’s Big Build said the foundations for the new pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Yarra River will be started and installation of beams over the Eastern Freeway are to be finished.

Other works will include building foundations for new noise walls and installing panels for new retaining walls between Tram and Middleborough Roads.
