The consortium building the North East Link in Melbourne has partnered with a UK firm to access an AI project delivery system.
Spark NEL (North East Link) is the consortium delivering the two 6.5 km, three-lane twin tunnels. It is a joint venture comprising Webuild, CPB Contractors, GS Engineering & Construction, and China Construction Oceania.
The UK company is nPlan has a project delivery AI system that predicts risk and delay and assures outcomes on major capital projects with reliable accuracy, according to Construction Briefing. This is underpinned by a deep learning system which draws on a dataset of past project schedules of more than 750,000 projects.
Chartered engineer and project controls director at Spark NEL, Rui Gaiao, said the later stages of delivery are where risks can multiply quickly and delays can pile up suddenly.
nPlan Insights Pro will enable the project controls team to quantify schedule uncertainty, highlight risky activities and sub-critical paths, and surface schedule complexity and quality challenges.
Mr Gaiao believes the consortium is acting responsibly to ensure the best possible chance of completing the North East Link by implementing the artificial intelligence system.
