Maritime precinct enters final stage

Challenges in a marine infrastructure project have been overcome, and some works are nearing completion while off-site precast concrete installation about to begin.

Carter Marine Group was awarded a varied construction contract for the Paynesville Slip Road Maritime Precinct which commenced construction three years ago.

The precinct is now moving into its final construction phase with East Gippsland Shire Council confirming the major works are well advanced after some early challenges.

“Construction commenced in January 2022 with Carter Marine Group starting onsite piling works and off-site fabrication of precast elements for the services jetty. Works were later delayed due to a review of the project’s detailed design following the discovery of unforeseen lake-bed conditions,” East Gippsland Council stated.

At the time, Carter Marine temporarily demobilised from the project site to work on another project, so the Council engaged an independent contractor to carry out further offshore geotechnical works which were used to update and improve the detailed design.

Carter Marine is currently working on completing Jetty 2 while the 80-metre Jetty 3 is in off-site prefabrication. Installation is expected to begin by the first week of March. The Bairnsdale company specialises in the design, fabrication and installation of marine infrastructure including fibre-reinforced polymer structures.

Status of the current works include:

  • Jetty 2 almost complete
  • Jetty 3 in offsite precast with installation set to begin within two weeks
  • Construction of the boat ramp is underway
  • Service Jetty prefabrication almost finished; installation to commence in March
  • The northern seawall section is complete
  • Underground services to be finalised this month.
