Construction is about to commence on Perth Airport’s new runway project with local workers benefitting from the SkyWay Joint Venture which has finished much of the enabling works.
The BMD Group and CPB Contractors’ JV was appointed to construct a major component of the Western Australia project including airfield pavements comprising a 3000-metre-long, 45-metre-wide runway, taxiway, shoulder, and jet blast areas.
CPB Contractors prioritises local employment, according to CIMIC (parent company) Group Executive Chairman Juan Santamaria. Their focus is also on skills creation and sustainable construction he added.
In addition to the airfield pavements at Perth Airport, the SkyWay contract also includes ddemolition of existing buildings and pavements; ground preparation and earthworks with more than one million cubic metres of fill material; diversion of existing utilities and stormwater drains; airfield drainage and landscaping, airfield perimeter, emergency, and facility access roads; security fencing and system; ground lighting, guidance signs, pavement marking, low voltage and communications systems and electrical equipment rooms.
As of March 2026, the demolition of existing buildings and pavements is in train along with fencing and site preparation while local road closures are in place and major earthworks are just about to begin.
The entire project is expected to be complete within three years and fully operational in 2028.
