Foundation and structural piling works have commenced on the Royal Perth Hospital Emergency Department expansion project in Western Australia.
The $807.3 million multi-storey development is funded by the state’s $2 billion Building Hospitals Fund and will be at the north-western end of the campus on Wellington Street, 500 metres from the presently situated ED.
The new Emergency Department is being constructed by Lendlease, a partner of the Perth Pulse Alliance managed by the Office of Major Infrastructure Delivery on behalf of the Department of Health, and the East Metropolitan Health Service.
Lendlease was appointed due to its experience delivering major health infrastructure across Australia. Over the past decade the company has completed more than $12 billion in health and medical facilities and currently has more than $6 billion under construction.
WA Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey said once it is complete, the hospital will have a larger emergency department with increased treatment capacity; additional ambulance bays and improved patient flow; additional bed capacity to support future demand; and connections to the existing hospital via a link, to integrate care and operations.
The project is part of a long-term redevelopment of the RPH precinct, with master planning underway to guide future development, according to the state government. Work will take place with minimal disruption to existing hospital services and uninterrupted patient care.
