The tallest hybrid tower on Earth with concrete at its core providing strength and stability, has topped out in Sydney’s CBD.
Designed by SHoP Architects and BVN Architecture as the Sydney headquarters for technology company Atlassian, the milestone for the 180-metre-high office tower was achieved last week.
The 39-storey hybrid structure of concrete, timber, and steel, towers 100 metres higher than the Ascent tower in Milwaukee, USA, which stands at 86.6 metres-high with 25 storeys.
This hybrid tower is being constructed by Built in a JV with Obayashi Corporation (Multiplex’s new Japanese owner) for co-owners Atlassian and Dexus.
The tower has a unique hybrid structural system with concrete cores that support mass timber floors and the internal structure. The whole is wrapped in an exoskeleton of steel and glass.
The exoskeleton supports seven ‘mega floors’, placed every four storeys to divide the building vertically. In these four-storey ‘habitats’ the tower features multi-floor atriums and elevated parks complementing the office spaces.
Using timber, this reduces the tower’s overall weight, and upfront embodied carbon by 50%, while the concrete and steel ensure strength and stability.
The tower is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
