Construction will be accelerated of the new Richmond Bridge over the Hawkesbury River in NSW, with an injection of funds and the contract awarded by Transport for NSW.
Stage 1 is currently underway, which will improve two key intersections on The Driftway at Blacktown Road and Londonderry Road while the build of the new bridge at North Richmond represents Stage 2.
Originally, this was going to be delivered as Stage 2A and 2B, however, new funds injected by the Commonwealth and State governments due to community pressure will see it completed as one stage and sooner than planned.
Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has awarded the Stage 2 design and construction project to Fulton Hogan. Construction will commence later this year and finish in 2029 while Stage 1 will be completed by 2027.
Stage 2 includes the new four-lane bridge over the Hawkesbury River; road widening improvements through North Richmond; intersection improvements; a new bypass south of Richmond town centre; and improved pedestrian and bicycle user connections.
TfNSW said the new bridge has been designed with two lanes in each direction to support future growth and will sit 10 metres higher than the existing river crossing to improve flood resilience.
The existing bridge will be converted into a dedicated active transport connection for pedestrians and cyclists between Richmond and North Richmond.
