A temporary bridge is being constructed across the Fitzroy River in Queensland to serve as a work platform for a permanent bridge which will be a key feature of the Rockhampton Ring Road.
Early works are well underway between Pink Lily and Parkhurst, north of Rockhampton city centre, with construction of a compacted gravel pad for the temporary bridge that will be situated upstream of the new crossing alignment.
The temporary 270-metre-long bridge will be anchored with 40 steel piles and 20 piers, with a deck made from precast concrete components, according to Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).
Previously used for Tasmania’s New Bridgewater Bridge, the steel components were delivered in 120 loads from Gladstone Port to Rockhampton late last year.
Design of the new permanent bridge over the Fitzroy River will be a balanced cantilever segmented box girder structure, 435-metres-long, with four lanes. Concrete culverts will also be used to manage water flow and minimise flood impacts.
The bridge, which will be the third Fitzroy River crossing, is a critical feature and part of the $1.98 billion Rockhampton Ring Road Project which involves 17.4km of new roadway, including a 14.7km western link of the Bruce Highway.
